A perfect sunny day at Polonia Reserve for a crucial round 19 match against top 4 side Adelaide City. We welcomed all of our sponsors to say thanks for the support for the season. This would also be Honorary President, Eddie Czerwinski’s last ever game at Polonia Reserve, as he’s off to Europe this week.
Right from the first whistle, the Croydon boys looked to take the game to the high flying visitors. In just the 4th min of the game, Vice Captain Rocky Visconte had a long range shot on goal which was fumbled by City’s keeper and into the back of the net! A perfect start for the Kings who needed to take at least a point from this game.
With their tails up, the Kings were putting on some fantastic forward pressure and making the City defence work hard. The workhorse Patty Caraccia was his usual self, with gut busting runs and fantastic link up play with young Dom Costanzo. Mark Brazzale had to experiment with his forward structure after Nicolo Interieri left the club mid week and in form Pete Mercurio falling ill the night before the game. Dom Costanzo was given a start and was often switching with James Skeffington up front to support Caraccia.
Nick Munro was called upon in the 32nd min with a magnificent tip over the bar from a city header… right in front of the Kings Sponsors marquee! Chances kept coming for the Kings and almost doubled our lead in the 44th min after Costanzo’s run and wicked cross whizzed across the face of the goal… just needed a touch from a white shirt and it was in. Unfortunately no one was on the end of the good work. Still, the Kings fans were more than happy with an impressive first half lead.
The experience of Visconte, Klimek, Skeffington and Brazzale was out for all to see. Unfortunately for the home side, City pounced on a loose ball in box after Munro went to ground from a clearance. A scramble saw the City forward poke in from close range and level the game at 1-1. Just 8mins later, the referee awarded City a penalty for what looked to be an accidental hand ball. With flashbacks to last years final, Nic Bucco stepped up to take the pen… and just like last years final, Nick Munro came up with the goods and made an impressive save! The home crowd went wild! Still 1-1 with 30mins to play.
Changes were made and we welcomed the return of gun forward Paul Radice from long term injury. Guy Miller was also given time on the park after a stint in the Reserves. Chances were few and far between for the home side in the 2nd half and City dominated play. The Croydon boys were able to hang on to a well deserved draw… appreciated by the home fans as its a crucial point to chase the last finals spot and get further away from relegation zone. A great result for Brazzale’s men who travel to bottom of the ladder Sturt Lion next week. A win will see us safe from relegation and possibly a point from the top 6.
The under 18′s started the day off with an unlucky 2-1 loss and the Reserves fought out a tough 1-1 draw. Vizzari’s reserves side went down 1-0 late in the game but managed to pinch an even later equalizer to take a point.
Next week is HUGE for the Kings… make sure we all get down to West Beach next Saturday to cheer the boys on! A win is like gold and with points in every game for the last 5 weeks, our confidence is up!
A big thanks to Julie Colangelo for all her work with the Sponsors Day- a fantastic way to thank those who help keep us the amazing club we are!
