Fresh off a strong Cup quarter final win last week, the Croydon boys return to Polonia Reserve for the first time since ANZAC Day. For the first time in the NPL, we host bottom of the ladder Sturt Lions in what is a crucial league game. The ladder is bunched up in both halves and Brazzale’s men were looking to separate themselves from the pack.

A special mention and thank you to Julie and Maria for organising the Croydon Mothers Day High Tea before the game. A wonderful way to celebrate the mothers of our club and all they do for our boys! Thanks Jules and Maria!

In what can only be described as a lack lustre first half, the visitors were the ones with the best chances of the half. The pace of the Sturt midfield along with too many incomplete passes from the Kings almost cost us 2-3 own goals. Luckily we went into the break 0-0. The home fans were hoping a half time rocket would fire the home side up for the 2nd half!

Not long into the 2nd half, striker Nicolo Interieri was substituted for Yarad Abetew along with a formation change up front that paid dividends. Shortly after, the Kings took the lead with a scrappy goal that was tucked away from Paul Radice. It wasn’t pretty but no one cared- it went in and Croydon had a 1-0 lead and looking to go on with things.

15mins later, Sturt were level. A long cross wasn’t put away from the Sturt striker who over ran the ball and some how the referee thought there was a push and awarded a penalty. In my opinion and the opinion of all the home fans, one of the softest pens ever give at Polonia Reserve. But it is what it is and Sturt’s Dylan Smith buried the spot kick. 1-1.

Luckily for the Kings, just 5mins later some brilliant link up passes (which were missing for most of the day) from Visconte and Radice, who supplied a quality thru ball to super sub Adrian D’Alfonso… who calmly slotted his first time touch past the approaching keeper. Croydon 2-1 and the home fans could smell the 3 points. The down side to the goal was a groin injury to Vice Captain Rocky Visconte who came off minutes after the goal. Fingers crossed the superstar midfielder isn’t out for too long.

The home side managed to hang on for the much needed 3 points and clock up our 2nd win in consecutive weeks. Sometimes you don’t play the best football… but hey, 3 points is 3 points and we move on to another important game against Para Hills away next Saturday.

A special mention must go to committee member and life member Fran Christison who seems to be our “good luck charm” as every time she goes and gets a wine, we seem to score! Its becoming a regular thing, so to all fans, make sure Fran always has a drink in her hand!! (Sorry Fran, couldn’t let it go this week!)

The Reserves had no issues with the Sturt Lions reserves with a thumping 7-1 win (after going 1-0 down early). A fantastic result for the stand in coaches and plenty of choices for senior coach Mark Brazzale. Adam Vizzari’s 18′s held on for a 0-0 draw earlier in the afternoon.

We now look to 3 huge games in 2 weeks- starting with Para Hills in Rd 12 next week at The Paddocks. Then our FFA Cup Semi Final against Modbury Jets on Wednesday 23rd at the Parks, followed by a big Rd 13 clash at home to South Adelaide.

A quick reminder that the Kings Quiz night isn’t far away! SATURDAY 26th MAY at 7pm. This is after the home game against South Adelaide- so book your tables with Julie today.

DONT MISS OUT ON A GREAT NIGHT- COME ALONG WITH SOME FRIENDS AND SUPPORT OUR CLUB!

MAKE SURE WE ALL MAKE THE AWAY TRIP TO PARA HILLS NEXT WEEK TO GET OUR CROYDON BOYS OVER THE LINE AND UP THE LADDER!

U18′s: 0-0 draw
Reserves: 7-1 win
Seniors: 2-1 win
