After another narrow loss in the league last week- the Kings looked to the Cup quarters to get back on the winners list and build some confidence. The State League high flyers Adelaide Blue Eagles were no push overs and loomed as a serious threat.

This threat emerged after just 3 mins when the State League side took the lead. Some poor defending from the Kings had ABE cruise down the right wing, deliver a cross without any Croydon player touching the ball and a striker tapping in from close range. Not the start mark Brazzale’s men were hoping for.

The early setback kicked our boys into gear and within minutes of conceding, we had our first chance. Young star Patty Caraccia had a magnificent opportunity in the 7th min, one on 1 with the keeper but unfortunately couldn’t beat the post. More chances followed from the boot of James Skeffington, another 1 on 1 for Luke Klimek and long range effort from Rocky Visconte. The Kings were dominating everything but the score board and went into the break 1-0 down.

The 2nd half started in the same fashion as the 1st… a great early chance to Paul Radice but couldn’t finish. The Croydon defence was solid, mids dominating the game and on the stroke of 61mins, we were back level thanks to Alex Sunasky. The defender returning to the starting 11 after illness was on the end of a Rocky Visonte cross, nodded in from close range. Mids Klimek, Skeffington, Visconte and Caraccia were all over the Blue Eagles and showing the quality difference between the 2 leagues.

14mins later we had our well deserved lead after Caraccia beautifully controlled the ball with his chest and slotted home from inside the 18 yard box. A very tidy finish from a well established youngster. The Kings smelt blood and were going in for the kill. Following some brilliant work from keeper Nick Munro, sub Adrian D’Alfonso buried our 3rd just moments after being introduced! Great work by Skeffington was rewarded with the finish by Dalf and the Kings were all but home!

Munro’s long fingers and grip kept the score in our favour with some excellent interceptions in the 6 and 18 yard box. Defenders Sunasky, Abetew, Panagaris and Martinello all worked well together and kept the Blue Eagles at bay. The Kings forward pressure from Radice & Interieri was too much for the home side and in the end, the Croydon boys marched on thru to the Cup Semi Finals. A well deserved win. Other than the first 3mins, our boys dominated every aspect of the game.

We have drawn Modbury Jets for the semi… The Jets will be tough to beat at this stage of the competition, but no doubt our boys will do everything they can to reach the final and the chance to play in the FFA Cup round of 32! With 5 ex Croydon boys in the Modbury squad, the passion and fire will be over flowing…. adding that extra spice to this game!

This Saturday the Kings return home to host cellar dwellers Sturt Lions in round 11 of the NPL. We look to take our excellent cup form to the league and make our way back up the ladder.
