After an up and down loss to City just 4 days earlier, the Croydon boys were back on home soil in Round 2 of FFA Cup action. Game 1 of 2 for the week against Metro Stars and we were keen to put them of notice early!
After a respectful minute silence held for ANZAC Day, both teams came out of the blocks with gusto and drive! It was Paul Radice with the early chance for Croydon in the 14th min, only to be denied by a brilliant save by the Metro keeper with his legs. In a tight first half, Croydon keeper Nick Munro made a couple crucial saves and interceptions to keep the score line at 0-0. A great start against the high flying Metro.
Just 15mins after the break, an absolutely cracking shot by Metro’s Liam Wooding beat a diving Munro and went in off the post. Nothing any keeper in the world could do about that! We found ourselves chasing the game with 30mins to play. Our forward pressure and press resembled that of our first half against Adelaide City last Saturday… so we knew something was coming!
75mins in, substitute James Skeffington tested the Metro keeper with a bullet of a shot that was well saved in the end. The chances were building for the Kings and Mark Brazzale’s changes seemed to be working well. Caraccia and Skeffington causing havoc on the wing and centre of the park. Along with key players Klimek, Visconte and Radice, the Metro defence was looking more and more concerned.
On the stroke of 80mins, a magnificent run down the right wing, along with a gem of a cross by Captain Luke Klimek, lobbed over the keepers head and knocked in from close range by cup specialist Paul Radice! The home crowed jumped on the fences as the Kings celebrated a well deserved equaliser… 1-1 and game back on!!
Just moments later, Munro was called into action this time with a wonderful reflex save on the line to keep the score locked at 1-1. A “grandstand” finish was head of us with 10mins to play in normal time. The work rate of every one of the Croydon boys was superb, and on the stroke of 90mins, young gun Patty Caraccia skinned the Metro defence with some fancy footwork and aggression, drawing a free kick right on the edge of the 18 yard box.
Up stepped Vice Captain Rocky Visconte with what looked to be the last chance to win it… Another wicked free kick by the ex A-League star found its way to the back post where again, Radice was on hand to burry it home! Kings 2-1 up and looking very good. The Metro boys didn’t know what hit them and minutes later, the full time whistle blew and the best team on the day had prevailed!
A fantastic, gutsy & solid performance from all the Kings players- showing that we can beat the “best” teams in the league… now to do it all again against Metro on Saturday in round 10 of the league!
SO, ALL KINGS FANS…. GET DOWN TO T.K SHUTTER RESERVE THIS SATURDAY TO CHEER OUR BOYS ON AS WE LOOK TO TAKE 3 POINTS FROM METRO & MAKE OUR WAY BACK UP THAT LADDER!
